Season two of Mr. & Mrs. Smith is getting back on track at Prime Video.
The Amazon-owned streamer has tapped Anna Ouyang Moench as showrunner, writer and executive producer for the series, which hit pause on season two in September 2025. Moench counts Apple TV’s Severance and Netflix’s anthology series Beef among her credits.
“Anna is a phenomenal storyteller with an incredible ability to balance character-driven drama, sharp humor, and emotional depth,” said Peter Friedlander, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “Her work on Beef and Severance speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled to have her at the helm of Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two as she builds on the series’ compelling world and pushes it into exciting new territory for our global Prime Video customers.”
Season one of Mr. & Mrs. Smith starred Donald Glover (who also co-created the show) and Maya Erskine as the title characters — two people recruited by a mysterious spy agency who live as a married couple while carrying out dangerous missions and also developing real feelings for each other. The season was nominated for 16 Emmys, including best drama series, and won two for guest actress Michaela Coel and stunt coordination. Prime Video ordered a second season in May 2024.
Moench will take over a showrunner from Francesca Sloane, who in September signed an overall deal at HBO and is working on a possible third season of Big Little Lies. Sources say Moench will have some completed scripts for season two at her disposal along with adding her own spin on the show.
Mark Eydeyshteyn (Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) were attached to play the title roles in season two. They’re not mentioned in the press release about Moench’s hiring, though Prime Video has never officially confirmed their casting. Sources say they’re still attached, though availability could become an issue. The production was also slated to move to Los Angeles for season two and secured a $22.4 million tax credit from the California Film Commission in March 2025; the credit expires after 18 months.
Sloane and Glover remain executive producers of Mr. & Mrs. Smith along with Moench, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas and Fam Udeorji. The show is a co-production between New Regency, which released the 2005 movie on which the series is loosely based, and Amazon MGM Studios.
Moench was a supervising producer on season two of Severance and wrote the critically acclaimed episode “Woe’s Hollow.” She’s an executive producer on season two of Beef, which is set to premiere in April on Netflix. Moench is repped by WME, Heroes & Villains and Jackoway Austen.
