Mickey Rourke has been removed from Celebrity Big Brother following what ITV called “instances of unacceptable behaviour” and “inappropriate language.”
The 72-year-old 9 ½ weeks star had a heated exchange with former Love Island contestant Chris Hughes during a task. While no physical altercation took place, Rourke’s behaviour was described as “threatening and aggressive.”
Rourke’s repeated warnings over offensive language
Earlier in the week, Rourke had received a formal warning from producers after making homophobic remarks towards fellow housemate JoJo Siwa, a 21-year-old American singer and LGBTQ+ icon.
Rourke asked Siwa if she “likes girls or boys,” and after she replied she was in a relationship with a non-binary partner, he said: “If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore.” Siwa firmly responded: “I can guarantee I’ll still be gay, and I’ll still be in a very happy relationship.” Later, Rourke apologised.
Further controversy erupted when Rourke said he needed “a fag” and gestured toward Siwa before adding, “I’m not talking to you.” Hughes intervened, saying: “You can’t say that.” He was later seen comforting Siwa following the interaction.
ITV released a statement confirming Rourke’s departure on Saturday, April 12. A spokesperson for the programme also told The Independent: “All Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team to prepare them for living in the House and to set out Big Brother’s expectation for appropriate behaviour and language. Housemates are monitored 24 hours a day and instances of inappropriate behaviour are dealt with appropriately and timely.”
Just two days ago, Rourke made headlines for his ‘grim kitchen habit.’ What did you think of Mickey Rourke as a Celebrity Big Brother contestant? Let us know in the comments below.
