Meryl Streep has slipped back into Miranda Priestley’s shoes.
Twenty years after the initial cult classic, “The Devil Wears Prada” is back with a sequel, due to be released on May 1.
Unlike her on-screen character Miranda Priestly, Streep was ready to hang up her stilettos once filming wrapped.
“As a person holding her position for 20 years, she kept her look but adapted it, as we do with time,” Streep told Vogue about her on-screen character’s 2026 wardrobe. “But I almost had PTSD from wearing high heels for 16 weeks. I feel like I should get a Medal of Freedom!”
Of the return to Priestly’s iconic wardrobe, Streep told the publication, “It was like going into the back of your own closet and finding something, thinking, ‘Oh, I wonder if this still fits?’”
Stanley Tucci echoed Streep’s sentiment, adding, “especially in this film, the costumes are so integral to the character.”
Part of the everlasting icon status of “The Devil Wears Prada” wardrobe surrounds the enduring nature of the wardrobe, which are of course meant to be ripped from the runway. It was an intentional choice — not surprisingly — from costume designer Molly Rogers.
“We have a really great roadmap—I love the first movie’s clothes because they’re timeless. You don’t see ‘look 14,’ or whatever,” she told the publication. “I wanted to do that, while making sure the clothing had a broad horizon,” she said of her curated collection.
Even Anne Hathaway couldn’t help but share in the energy that Streep’s head honcho brought to set.
“Meryl, as Miranda, had started down the hallway ahead of me — I was maybe 50 feet behind her — and seeing her from the back was practically psychedelic,” Hathaway told Vogue. “I just felt so many portals open up at that moment. I was 22 again, but it was still now. Thankfully, this time, she didn’t stay in character the entire time, so we had a lot of laughs.”
Andy Sachs might be entering the sequel armed with her new, albeit now well-established, fashion chops, but it was Miranda Priestly who will forever been the queen bee.
