As the first major awards show of year, the Golden Globes set the tone for what the rest of the season’s red carpets might look like — and judging by Sunday’s looks, to hear Melissa Rivers tell us, fashion fans can expect plenty of “safe and pretty, but not jaw-dropping” gowns in the months to come.
“The Globes are usually where [stars] have fun and take bigger risks; the Academy Awards is the most formal,” the “Fashion Police” alum and daughter of late icon Joan Rivers tells Page Six Style.
“I always say [the Oscars are] like going to your very rich grandparents’ house and you’re not sure if you’re in the will.”
So Rivers found it “really interesting” that so many stars “looked like they could have stepped out of a high-end deb ball” at the Globes, too. Below, she breaks down the best and worst of this year’s carpet.
Elle Fanning
Rivers calls Fanning’s leopard print-accented ballgown “the only real big fashion moment that was edgy” of the evening, but she’s “kind of on the fence” about the design itself.
“She’s such a fashion girl that of course you take notice,” she says. “It felt very runway, which is a good thing. And that’s what we look to her for. If it had walked past me on a runway, I would’ve went, ‘Interesting!’”
Zoe Saldaña
“Come on — the dress, the body, the hair, the makeup, the on-trend chocolate brown, the big huge wrap. She owned the carpet, full stop.”
Zoë Kravitz
“Neat as a pin, as my mother used to say. Every angle, everything was perfect. Saint Laurent had a big night.”
