Netflix has released the first photo of Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen in the hotly anticipated new series, “The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.”
In the photo, McCarthy, 56, and Owen, 61, are in character as Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, JonBenét’s parents.
According to Netflix, the show will be a dramatization of “one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history,” and it will also cover “the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the death of JonBenét Ramsey.”
The cast also includes Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill and Chris Bauer as cops investigating the crime.
The dramatic role will be a departure for the “Spy” actress, who rose to fame in comedies.
During an interview at the 2025 Golden Globes, McCarthy told Entertainment Tonight that the role has been “quite a challenge,” and said “my heart goes out to” that “poor family.”
The “Gilmore Girls” actress said, “I love Patsy,” and noted that she thinks the show is doing “a really great version” of the story.
“I’m hoping we’re giving [the family] their humanity, as well as telling the story” McCarthy said, noting that she thinks speculating that they killed their own daughter is “a blood sport.”
The “Bridesmaids” actress said, “I’m really proud” of the show.
JonBenét was killed in her own house on Christmas night in 1996, when she was six.
The horrific crime was followed by a media circus that highlighted details such as JonBenét’s participation in child beauty pageants.
The Ramseys were an affluent family in Boulder, Colorado, and at various points, Patsy and John were suspects, as was their son, Burke, who was nine at the time of his sister’s murder. In 2019, Burke settled a $750 million defamation lawsuit against CBS after a television series called “The Case of JonBenét Ramsey” suggested he was the culprit.
Patsy died of ovarian cancer in 2006 at age 49. John is still alive, and is currently 82.
In 2016, Pathologist/coroner Dr. Michael Baden, who consulted on the cold case, told Page Six’s Cindy Adams, “I always believed it was someone in the household.”
However, in a November 2024 interview, Joe Berlinger, who directed the Netflix documentary, “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey,” told The Post, “I am firmly convinced that the Ramsey family is innocent.”
Berlinger believes the case remains unsolved because of local police “mishandling” it at the beginning, he said.
“The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey” will premiere December 10 on Netflix.
