Like a perfect Bollywood masala film, this actor’s journey to fame has been high on drama. Coming from a humble background, he managed to sail through all the challenges and create a niche for himself in the film industry. His story serves as a motivation to all. Despite facing poverty while growing up, he didn’t let life negatively affect his determination to turn dreams into goals. He even faced bankruptcy after achieving success but today, he is among the most celebrated actors of Bollywood with some of the biggest blockbuster hits in his filmography.
The star in discussion is Jackie Shroff. The actor – born on February 1, 1957 – was named as Jaikishan Kakubhai Shroff by his Gujarati father and Turkmen mother. His family went through a tough time when they lost their wealth in stock market. They lived in a chawl, in a one-room home. In one of the interviews, Jackie Shroff opened up about his childhood and spoke about the difficulties faced by his family. In an interview with Ranveer Allahabadia, Jackie Shroff shared, “I remember those years when I would stand outside Chawl’s bathroom with my mug. There were seven small buildings and we had a total of three bathrooms for all the people of those buildings. There would be a line outside the toilet every morning because people would be in a hurry to go to work.”
In his growing up years, Jackie Shroff did odd jobs to support his family. He used to sell peanuts outside movie theatres to make a living. Reportedly, he even tried his luck to become a Chef at Taj, however, he was rejected due to lack of qualifications. He then tried his hand at modelling and never turned back.
His Bollywood journey began with Swami Dada. He was among the supporting cast. In 1983, came Subhash Ghai’s Hero that established Jackie Shorff as a prolific and bankable star. He then appeared in major films like Ram Lakhan, Parinda, Tridev and more.
Jackie Shroff tasted success and continued so, for decades. However, he faced a tough time when he went bankrupt after his wife’s production venture Boom tanked at the box office. He is married to Ayesha Shroff who belonged to a royal family. He fell in love with her when she was just 13. In an interview, Jackie Shroff spoke about the bankruptcy phase and said, “I knew that we tried something and we lost something. If I had to pay for it, I’d pay. I had worked as much as I could and we repaid everybody so that my family’s name gets clear.” They together overcame the struggles and are now leading a luxurious life. Jackie Shroff’s networth is reportedly more than Rs 212 crore.
