The man just wanted to have his cake and eat it, too.

Martin Short nearly ruined Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s September 2025 wedding in Santa Barbara, Calif., by cutting into their cake — before they did.

The actor, who co-stars with Gomez on “Only Murders in the Building,” hilariously recalled the mortifying moment on Wednesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Short, 75, explained that he and about 12 cast members — including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd — were hanging out together at the reception, which was marked by “big tents” and “individual seating areas with couches and chairs.”

“All of us were together, and there was a cake — a wedding cake — by our section. But it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed that there was a wedding cake for each section in the back, so after a few hours — and they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet — Steve said he was gonna leave,” Short told Kimmel.

“And maybe I’d had a cocktail — I don’t know. So I said, ‘Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!’ I had a fork in my hand, and I cut the wedding cake [on] one side [and] cut it [on] the other. And then all the people in our group screamed, ‘Marty!’”

According to Short, “Steve was so stunned” by the move that he “gained color.”

In that moment, the comedian realized that was “the wedding cake,” which he learned wasn’t going to be presented for another hour.

A photo of the defiled dessert — which was a heart-shaped sheet cake with white frosting and black “Just Married” lettering, topped with a bride and groom figurine — flashed across the screen.

“See, I tried to fix it with a fork,” Short explained, admitting that he immediately knew, “This is bad.”

“So I turned to Paul Rudd and said, ‘Do we just leave?’” he recalled as the audience erupted in laughter.

But he chose to stay and watch as the wedding coordinator rushed over, immediately summoning the chef.

“He was like a French guy: ‘What the hell happened here?!’ And then they did surgery,” Short shared. “But it ended up being very — like a Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done.”

Short claimed he and Martin agreed to keep the mishap from Gomez — at least for a while — but word got back to her before the night was over.

“And as I was leaving, Selena came by: ‘Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!’”

Another picture flashed across the screen showing Blanco giving Gomez a kiss on the cheek as they stood in front of the repaired cake. Kimmel’s team made sure to zoom in on where Short had cut into it.

“Let’s see how the repair job was,” the host teased, prompting Short to insist, “Not bad!”

“But also not great!” Kimmel quipped, as the cut marks were still slightly visible.

Despite the ordeal, Short described the nuptials as “perfect” and “beautiful.”

He also gushed over the couple, saying, “It is such a great thing to go to a wedding where you just know that these people are perfect for each other.

“Selena is, like, an extra child of mine. We adore her so much, and she found this guy, and he’s the greatest guy, and they have the greatest hang, and they’re wildly in love.”

Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37 — who run in similar circles in the music industry and have even collaborated — began dating in the summer of 2023.

They announced their engagement the following December, the same month they bought a house together in Beverly Hills.

The pop star and the record producer have both expressed a desire to have children, but due to Gomez’s medical issues — including lupus — she has said that they will either use a surrogate or adopt.
