Lisa Curry has opened up about the heartbreaking medical condition that almost contributed to the deterioration of her marriage to ironman Grant Kenny.

The 64-year-old champion swimmer appeared on the Healthy Her podcast and told host Amelia Phillips that her relationship with Grant, to whom she was married from 1986 to 2009, suffered immensely when she started perimenopause.

‘Perimenopause played into the breakup a lot. At the time, things start to annoy the crap out of you. There are days when you think, “I don’t even know why I’m married,”‘ Lisa began.

She went on to say that one symptom of early menopause—which can affect women in their 40s—was increased irritability, which can significantly impact a relationship

‘It was like, “I don’t even know why you or I exist. I don’t know why all this stuff happens, why is everything so hard?”‘ she said.

The Brisbane-born athlete said that she began to lose sight of who she was as she suffered through the condition.

‘You lose yourself, your confidence. It’s kind of not fair, if you’ve got a husband, you really need to sit down and say, “Hey, I’m exhausted.” You just want to feel safe,’ she said.

‘When they understand, they can scoop you up and make you feel safe.’

Lisa was married to champion ironman Grant, 62, for 23 years and had three children with him, Jaimi, Morgan and Jett.

They publicly announced their separation in May 2009.

While their separation occurred in 2009, the couple did not officially finalise their divorce until 2017.

They have since maintained an amicable relationship and co-parenting partnership.

In 2018, Lisa married professional Elvis impersonator Mark Tabone, and their relationship is still going strong.

It comes after Lisa revealed in April last year that she had officially given up alcohol after suffering a terrifying health scare while holidaying in Fiji.

The retired Olympic swimmer shared a raw and deeply personal update to Instagram, posting a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed in Queensland, looking weary.

‘Just a little overnight stay in hospital,’ Lisa captioned the photo, before taking her followers on a sobering journey through her long battle with serious heart issues – and her decision to give up booze for good.

‘Seventeen years ago… I had Myocarditis, 22,000 irregular heartbeats a day, a mitral valve prolapse (hereditary from my mum), a fractured sternum (from a chiropractic appointment),’ Lisa began.

‘Then a defibrillator, an infection, a month’s stay in hospital on heavy antibiotics – and then finally home, living a different life.’

The legendary athlete revealed she had to permanently give up alcohol for her health.
