After a mistrial was declared in Lindsay Clancy’s murder case last week, her defense attorney shared he’s defending a woman who allegedly killed her grandmother nearly four years ago on Halloween.
Kevin Reddington told news outlets following Clancy’s Friday, September 4, mistrial that he’s to defend Kelsie Costello Cote, 30, at trial, according to The Boston Globe. Her murder trial has not yet been scheduled.
Kelsie, who stands accused of killing Doris Cote, 74, has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder, assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and withholding evidence, in connection with Doris’ death, per the newspaper.
Reddington has described Kelsie as a “very nice young lady,” according to the newspaper.
On October 31, 2022, one of Doris’ family members called 911 to report they discovered her dead inside her North Adams home, CBS News reported.
A police investigation revealed Kelsie allegedly killed Doris and tried to get rid of evidence, per the outlet.
Prosecutors have argued Kelsie was addicted to drugs and convinced Doris to name her as the beneficiary of her $1 million estate before she stabbed her with scissors and beat her with a paperweight, The Berkshire Eagle reported in May 2023.
Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue, while speaking with the newspaper following Kelsie’s May 2023 arraignment, said that Kelsie is suspected of premeditation in her grandmother’s death.
“We have a lot of significant information from the Google searches that she was planning out how to kill her grandmother,” Shugrue said.
Kelsie was allegedly the last person who saw Doris ahead of her murder, according to prosecutors, The Boston Globe reported.
While discussing Kelsie’s case, Reddington told news reporters that he’s prepared to continue defending Clancy in the event that prosecutors decide to retry her, according to the newspaper.
A hearing for Kelsie is set for September 28, one day before a scheduled court hearing for Clancy, the newspaper reported.
“In between Lindsay and Kelsie, I’ll get it done,” Reddington said, according to the newspaper.
Clancy is in custody at Tewksbury State Hospital, where she’s receiving psychiatric care, after jurors couldn’t unanimously agree whether she was criminally responsible in the murders of her three children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, who was 8 months old, Us reported. Clancy has admitted she fatally strangled each of her children while experiencing postpartum psychosis.
While appearing on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, September 8, Reddington called on President Donald Trump to consider pardoning Clancy.
“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady and the person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said.
