Nothing screams “Mama I’ve made it!” more than catching shade from Naomi Campbell at the Met Gala.
Actress and “Transcendent: A Memoir” author Laverne Cox revealed the supermodel left her gagging when she dissed her for a photo op at the famed fashion ball one year.
In an as-yet-unreleased episode of Bronwyn Newport’s new “Walk-In” Substack series, Cox explained she was taking photos with Bella Hadid, “and Naomi walks by, and the photographers are like, ‘Naomi! Take a picture with Laverne and Bella!’”
The photog’s plea fell on unwilling ears. Cox claims Campbell paused, looked her up and down, “and she just walked off!” Cox spoke about the incident as if it was one of the best moments of her life.
“It was the greatest honor in the world. The fact that I got to see that live? She was like… ‘Hmmm, No.’ And walked away,” Cox said.
Cox made her Met Gala debut in 2019, wearing Christian Siriano. She was hesitant to share the story about Campbell, but then threw her hands up, and proclaimed, “She knows she did it!” The trangensder pioneer, however, insisted that there weren’t hard feelings. “Naomi and I are cool,” she told Newport. “I’ve met Naomi many times. She’s always sweet to me. [At] that moment, she just wasn’t feeling it! But that look [she gave me] – was so iconic. Like, to be shaded by Naomi Campbell?”
Newport’s new series takes her viewers inside the closets and wardrobes of fashion insiders like Cox, who is a collector of Thierry Mugler. Future guests also include Betsey Johnson, Symone, and Siriano.
