Labyrinth fans are raging after it was officially announced that the David Bowie cult classic is getting a sequel nearly four decades after its release.
It was confirmed on Thursday that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a new movie, said to be a follow up to the original 1986 film.
Although plot details for Eggers’ project remain under wraps for now, it’s been revealed that he is writing the script with Sjón, his collaborator on 2022 Viking actioner The Northman.
But the announcement is not sitting well with protective fans, who have slammed the news and have even begged the director to ‘leave it alone’.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: ‘Not a single thing about Labyrinth implies needing a sequel nor will it be any good because Bowie is dead and Bowie IS Jareth.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another raged: ‘As much as I like eggers, LABYRINTH DOES NOT NEED A SEQUEL LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!! The original is so charming and perfect a sequel just wouldn’t work these days (or ever).’

The original film was released in 1986 and starred Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly
A third pleaded: ‘I’m a big “some movies don’t need sequels” proponent, leave Labyrinth alone.’
‘NOOOOO PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE LET IT BE PLEASE PLEASE GOD NO PLEASE NOOOOOO,’ a fourth requested.
‘We don’t want this,’ wrote a fifth.
Others were less harsh and reasoned that if a Labyrinth sequel has to be made, Eggers is the right person for the job.
One penned: ‘I most definitely DO NOT want a sequel to this movie. It’s perfect as it is. BUT if anyone’s going to do it justice it’s probably Robert Eggers.’
‘Classic movie, not sure how you make a sequel, especially without David Bowie, but Robert Eggers has a pretty good track record now,’ added another.
Labyrinth, like all good cult films, was not commercially successful when it was first released in 1986 but over the years has become widely popular and is still shown at movie events.
Its campy story, fantastical puppets and the brilliance of Bowie – and his sing-along classics like Magic Dance – have ensured it remains a fan favorite.

The film starred a young Jennifer Connelly who played Sarah, a teen who, after being forced to babysit, wished her baby brother away – and the besotted Goblin King Jareth (Bowie) was all too happy to oblige.
Sarah then journeys into a world of magical creatures where nothing is as it seems.
The movie was the last to be created and directed by the visionary Jim Henson before his death aged 53 in 1990.
Bowie died in 2016 aged 69 after battling cancer in secret for 18 months.
Prior to Thursday’s sequel news, there were reports of a Labyrinth remake in 2016.
At the time, The Hollywood Reporter claimed Guardians Of The Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman was developing a script.
