Kate Ferdinand has admitted her step-children threatened to put the children she shares with husband Rio Ferdinand ‘in a cupboard’.
Former TOWIE star Kate, 35, co-parents Tate, 18, Lorenz, 19, and Tia, 15, with husband Rio, 47, and they are also proud parents to daughter Shae, two, and son Cree, five.
She has been open about the challenges of raising a blended family, and her relationship with the teenagers after their mother Rebecca tragically died from breast cancer in 2015 aged just 34.
In a new episode of her Blended podcast, Kate’s close frend and co-host Nathalie Holmes-Lewis revealed that when the star first got together with Rio, his children were worried about their future family plans.
During a conversation about sibling rivalry with child behaviour specialist, San Kaur Mehra, Nathalie said: ‘This is reminding me of Tate and Lorenz when Kate and Rio first got together. They said, “Oh, if they have a baby, we’re going to put it in the cupboard.”
A laughing Kate nodded in agreement as she clarified ‘Don’t worry, they’ve not been put in the cupboard,’ but agreed with Nathalie as she explained how ‘the two boys were not supportive of another baby.’

Kate said she has faced many challenges over the years, and still does, raising children of different ages, explaining later in the podcast ‘as a stepparent setting rules, you are going to upset upset the stepkid if it’s not what they like.’
‘You’re going to upset any child, but for some reason it feels more personal when it’s a stepchild.’
‘I also think anyone with kids of all different ages, it’s a hard bag trying to control and stay calm 24/7. It’s near on impossible.’
Kate admitted that lately she has been clashing with her teenage step-daughter Tia over her timekeeping which ’causes chaos within the house.’
Explaining how she feels like she has been having the same conversations ‘for eight years’, Kate said she felt ‘drained’ by the clashes and told Tia: ‘We’ve done the nicey nicy and I could lose it in the upcoming days. This is what I said.’
‘And then when I lose it, everyone says, “What’s happened to Kate?” She’s a psycho. Or Kate’s mental.”
Kate also hinted at her family’s nickname for her, laughing as she confessed: ‘You know, back in the day, they used to call me Aggie Maggie. But I’m actually not that aggy anymore. I’ve got to be honest, I’m actually, I’m in my more calmer era.’
Despite their clashes, Kate was keen to point out how proud she is to have helped raise her stepchildren and their open and honest relationship, explaining:
‘I look at like the teenage kids and I’ve been in their life a long time and I feel proud that I’ve had a part to play in them being able to just say it how it is.’

‘Like for example, Tate when he came on the podcast for anyone that hasn’t seen it, a lot of people said, “I can’t believe he’s been so open and said how it is.” I love that he has.’ I love that he can just voice how he feels.’
In a previous episode of Kate’s podcast, Tate revealed he tried to sabotage his father’s relationship with Kate out of ‘loyalty’ towards his late mother.
He admitted he told lies about her ‘meeting random men’ and ‘locking him and his siblings in a room’ after she moved into their family home in 2018.
During the frank conversation, Kate and Tate reflected on the ‘hell of a journey’ they’ve been on as he admitted there was a period when he ‘hated’ her.
Speaking about the ‘jealousy’ Rio’s children felt, Kate retold the story of how a delivery containing a present for the former footballer led to Tate accusing her of ‘meeting random men on the drive’.
Kate said: ‘Once I got a phone for Rio and the kids were asleep… someone came to drop it on the drive and they’re a man.
‘Tate told people that when dad’s not there, I’m meeting men on the drive. So then a few people thought that when Rio was out, I was meeting random guys on the drive.’
Tate replied: ‘You just had a hater in the house. I used to be so jealous. Not jealous, I don’t even know the word, but I would try and like get into all of your business.’

The television personality also revealed how trying to hide a Valentine’s Day balloon delivery from Rio’s children ‘spiralled out of control’, after they began to spread the lie she had ‘locked them in a room’.
‘I said to the kids, ‘Right, go in that room. Close the door,’ because I had a delivery coming.
‘How it’s come out is, ‘When dad’s not there, Kate locks us in the room.”
She described the ‘massive turmoil’ she felt as people then began to question her if she ‘was doing mad stuff’ like locking the children in a room.
Recalling his side of the story, Tate said: ‘I was just in such a confused state of mind. I didn’t know what was going on. Dad didn’t really like surprise us with things like that.
‘So that was like a bit of a weird thing like, ‘why am I being told to stay in here for five minutes?’ You come back as if nothing’s happened.’
Tate added the incident happened during his ‘half-hating’ era and he would play ‘mind games’ on Kate by flipping between being loving to not speaking or even looking at her.
‘I remember when I hated you. I hated you. And then we might do something good and then I would flip straight away back into loving mode and then I’d have to almost lie about what I did before to get myself out of it,’ he said.
