Hong Kong actor Joel Chan was recently seen rehearsing for a performance in a restaurant in Toronto, Canada, prompting chatter online about whether it was a step down for the TVB Best Actor.
In an interview with Hong Kong media outlet HK01 on Sept 21, he revealed that the gig was simply to earn money for his son’s private tutoring.
Joel, who turns 50 in October, explained that since starting primary school, the boy’s homework and schedule have become more challenging, requiring the help of a tutor.
As he is frequently overseas and his wife may not be able to manage everything after work, he wanted someone to help guide his son and support his learning.
On Aug 30, Joel held a gala dinner and meet-and-greet in Toronto at Auric King Fine Restaurant.
Photos and videos circulated online showed him rehearsing at a seemingly empty venue.
Some fans reportedly noted the lack of a crowd and that the setup looked less grand compared to his usual appearances.
Addressing criticism about the seemingly modest setup, Joel explained that the rehearsal only took place late at night, after all the customers had left, so there was no audience.
He shared that the restaurant performance was not cheap, adding that the VVIP tables were priced at more than $2,000 Canadian dollars (S$1,800) each.
He said: “As an artist, wherever there is an audience, that place is a stage; you need not worry too much about status.
“Especially now that the film and entertainment industry has entered an ‘ice age’ and everyone doesn’t have much work, I am truly grateful to have this opportunity to fly to Canada and perform.”
He added that the audience was very enthusiastic and that the happiest thing was being able to meet a lot of fans.
