Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell (Bones and All) are in negotiations to star in a remake of Single White Female, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures, which has a deal with Sony, is looking to remake 1992 horror drama that starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The feature was directed by Barbet Schroeder and was based on John Lutz’s 1990 novel SWF Seeks Same. Lutz co-wrote the adaptation with Don Roos.
Sony offered no comment on the reboot project. The Insneider first reported the news.
In the original, Fonda played Allison, a woman who takes in Hedra (Leigh) as a roommate, only to bring into her Upper West Side flat a terrifying stalker worthy of a suspense thriller. Sony’s Columbia Pictures distributed Single White Female, which was made for $16 million and grossed $48 million domestically.
The horror drama scored a 2005 direct-to-video sequel, Single White Female 2: The Psycho, which starred Kristen Miller. The update of Single White Female from 3000 Pictures will be notable for neither Ortega and Russell being white.
Besides appearing in Netflix’s Wednesday as Wednesday Addams, Ortega also toplines A24’s Death of a Unicorn, acting alongside Paul Rudd as a father and daughter who accidentally hit a unicorn with their car and bring it to the wilderness retreat of a wealthy pharmaceutical executive.
Ortega will also star in the suspense thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, the first feature film from the pop star The Weeknd set for a May 16 theatrical release. Ortega will perform the role of Anima alongside Barry Keoghan as Lee.
Russell, the breakout star of Trey Edward Schults’ family drama Waves, also starred alongside Timothee Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal love story Bones and All, where she played the role of Maren. She also appeared in TNT’s Falling Skies, before a part in Netflix’s Lost in Space.
