Jeff Garcia, the stand-up comedian who provided the voice for the teenager Sheen Estevez on The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the spinoff Planet Sheen, died Wednesday. He was 50.
Garcia’s death was announced on Instagram by his son, Joseph. According to TMZ, he had suffered a cerebral aneurysm in the spring and a stroke more recently and died at a Southern California hospital after being taken off life support.
Garcia voiced Sheen, a Mexican American kid who is obsessed with the superhero known as Ultra Lord, in the 2001 film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and then for all three seasons (2002-06) of the Nickelodeon series. On the show, his character often went on adventures with his pals Jimmy (voiced by Debi Derryberry) and Carl Weezer (Rob Paulsen).
In 2006, he continued working with Jimmy Neutron co-producer Steve Oedekerk by voicing Pip the Mouse in the 2006 film Barnyard and the 2007-10 Nickelodeon spinoff series Back at the Barnyard. He then returned as Sheen in Planet Sheen, which ran for a season and 26 episodes in 2010-11.
Born on May 3, 1975, in La Puente, California, Garcia started out as a stand-up in the early 1990s. “My shows are about 60 percent made up right then and there,” he said in a 2015 interview. “My take on my job has always been that, if people are paying money, they don’t want to see a live version of what they just saw on TV.”
Garcia showed up on episodes of NBC’s Caroline in the City and ABC’s Dangerous Minds starting in 1995 before he was hired for Jimmy Neutron, and he would voice Sheen for video games and other TV shows.
Garcia also voiced the penguin Rinaldo — one of “The Amigos” — in the Happy Feet films that were released in 2011 and ’06 and handled several characters in the Rio features from 2011 and ’14.
His voice-acting résumé also included Marmaduke (2010) and stints on Clone High, Ozzy & Drix, ChalkZone and The Proud Family, and he was a regular on the 2012-13 CW live-action sitcom Mr. Box Office, starting Bill Bellamy.
Survivors include his daughter, Savannah.
