Jaya Bachchan, the veteran actress and Samajwadi Party MP is back in news for speaking her mind and making fiery statements on Akshay Kumar’s social drama Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Padman calling them a ‘flop’ film. The comments have stirred up controversy, promoting backlash from the internet users who supported the film for its women centric theme.
Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha released in 2017, featuring Akshay and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead role. The story revolves around a boy who madly loves a girl. However, after marriage she started to complain as there is no toilet in the house. The film played an impactful role in promoting hygiene awareness and was also praised by Bill Gates for its impressive plot.
In an event, Jaya Bachchan said, “Abhi aap naam bhi dekhiye toh mai aise picturein kabhi na dekhu. Toilet Ek Prem Katha, yeh koi naam hai? Yeh koi title hai? Please bataiye aap logo me se kitne log iss tarah ki title wali film dekhne jayenge. (You look at the name. I would never watch a film with such a title. Is this a title? You tell me how many of you would watch a film with such a name.)” She further added, “Picture flop hai (It’s a flop film).”
Akshay Kumar’s fans came in defense of his film that supported the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative. One of the user commented “Jaya Bachchan says nobody will watch movies with name like Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Padman. Collections: Toilet Ek Prem Katha- 216 crore. Padman- 191 crores. Much more than movies of Abhishek. Btw Amitabh Bachchan made a movie Piku where all he talked about was toilet.”
Another user wrote, “”In reality, we want to watch socially relevant movies which have little violence and more engaging story to it. What nonsense she is speaking.”
Third netizen added, “Ironically, these movies highlighted social issues of women who faced issues for lack of toilets menstrual hygiene… Women laughing on such important issues just show the bubble they live in…”
Jaya Bachchan often gets embroiled in controversies because of her provocative statements. Earlier, she was in the news because of her Rajya Sabha controversy. She wasn’t happy being addressed as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ by deputy Chairman Harivansh.
