Jamie Lee Curtis and her family are donating $1 million toward the relief efforts for L.A.’s devastating wildfires.
The actress wrote on Instagram on Thursday: “As the fire still rages on and @calfire @losangelesfiredepartment and all the available first responders and agencies involved in fighting fire and saving lives are still hard at work and neighbors and friends are banding together to save each other, my husband [Christopher Guest] and I and our children have pledged $1 million from our Family Foundation to start a fund of support for our great city and state and the great people who live and love there.”
She continued: “I’m in communication with Governor [Gavin] Newsom and Mayor [Karen] Bass and Senator [Adam] Schiff as to where those funds need to be directed for the most impact.”
Curtis spoke on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday tight, getting emotional and breaking down while discussing the extensive damage across the Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Santa Monica areas of the city. “As you know, where I live is on fire right now,” Curtis began.
“The entire city of Pacific Palisades is burning. I flew here last night, I was on the plane, started getting texts and it’s fucking gnarly, you guys. It’s just a catastrophe in Southern California. Obviously, there have been horrific fires in many places. This is literally where I live. Everything: the market I shop in. The schools my kids go to. Friends, many, many, many, many, many friends now have lost their homes. It’s a really awful situation.”
The fires began in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday morning, forcing the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents and burning 15,800 acres so far. Firefighters are also currently battling other blazes, including the Eaton, Hurst, Lidia and Woodley fires, in various areas of Los Angeles County. An evacuation order in the Hollywood Hills has been lifted.
Five people are dead and more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed. The homes of numerous stars have been destroyed, including those of Billy Crystal, Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, Eugene Levy, Anna Faris, Cary Elwes, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, James Woods, Diane Warren, Cameron Mathison and Ricki Lake.
A myriad of events have been postponed or canceled, including premieres for A Better Man, Unstoppable, The Last Showgirl and Wolf Man, as well as the Academy Award nominations and Producers Guild Awards nominations. Elsewhere, Hacks star and Golden Globe winner Jean Smart has urged networks to forgo airing upcoming Hollywood awards shows and donate to the victims of the L.A. wildfires and firefighters.
