They say an elephant never forgets, and this controversial accessory didn’t go unnoticed.
Kim Kardashian landed in hot water recently for carrying what appears to be an extremely rare Hermès Birkin bag crafted from the skin of an elephant in a scene from her new Hulu show, “All’s Fair.”
In a Vogue Hong Kong interview with Soki Mak, the stylist who worked with Kardashian on the series, the polarizing purse is also visible in a behind-the-scenes photo presumably taken during one of the 45-year-old star’s wardrobe fittings.
According to PETA, while Hermès never actually sold elephant leather bags, the luxury label made a series of carryalls from the skin of an elephant who was allegedly shot and killed on a safari in the ’80s. The ultra-rare bags can cost up to $125,000 or more on resale sites.
And when luxury expert Daniel Wesson (aka @birkinjunky) shared a post about Kardashian’s character, Allura Grant, carrying one of the infamous elephant Birkins, Instagram users were largely horrified — including Ireland Baldwin.
“This is … Beyond,” Baldwin commented.
The 30-year-old model and actress also re-posted a shot of the Skims founder with the bag on her Instagram Story, writing, “This is so disgusting and shameful. I don’t understand how these people are supported the way they are.”
Kardashian’s rep didn’t immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
“Yeah I draw the line somewhere :(,” another person commented on Wesson’s post.
“Love Birkins but elephant is another level. They’re like spiritual animals this can’t happen 😭,” added another.
Wrote a third, “Does this woman have no boundaries at all!!!”
However, some users defended her, noting that Kardashian didn’t purchase the decades-old bag herself.
“I mean, its already made lol…why be upset about it? I don’t support hunting at all, but she didn’t personally request this bag,” one wrote.
The Kardashian-Jenners are known for their extensive Birkin bag collections.
In 2024, Kardashian put her peacock blue Porosus Crocodile Birkin up for sale on her family’s Kardashian Kloset site, asking a whopping $49,995 for the purse.
