News of the death of a British-Nigerian influence following a cosmetic procedure in Thailand has been making the rounds online.
Thai publication The Nation reported on Sunday (Sept 6) that Igho ‘Tiny’ Ubiribo died aged 43 in Bangkok in March after receiving genital enlargement injections. He was known for sharing his luxury lifestyle online and had over 185,000 followers on Instagram.
A London coroner has linked his death to the cosmetic procedure, Nigeria’s Guardian reported on Saturday, citing an inquest at Inner West London Coroner’s Court.
The inquest heard that about 40ml of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine had been used for penile filler injections at an unnamed clinic in Bangkok. They were intended to increase girth.
Igho underwent the procedure on March 5, The Sun reported.
After this, the influencer and his wife went for a massage, during which he complained of chest pain and lost consciousness twice.
He was taken conscious to Sukhumvit Hospital but lost consciousness before a computed tomography (CT) scan could be performed.
Doctors subsequently diagnosed a pulmonary embolism and transferred him to intensive care, where medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for over 100 minutes.
He could not be revived.
A post-mortem examination in the United Kingdom found that the material in Igho’s lungs was consistent with the hyaluronic acid used in the genital enlargement injections, according to the inquest.
The findings were consistent with an autopsy conducted in Thailand, reported The Sun.
Igho’s doctor in London also told the inquest that he had previously undergone joint surgery, and suffered from pre-diabetes and gout, though he did not have any other significant medical conditions.
Assistant coroner Jean Harkin concluded that the procedure caused the fatal pulmonary embolism.
What is pulmonary embolism?
According to SingHealth, a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the lung, leading to a blockage of the blood supply to the lungs.
The blood clot can originate from the legs, which may break off and travel through the blood stream to lodge in the lungs, causing severe damage to the organ.
In other cases, it may also start in the lung’s blood vessels.
Symptoms associated with pulmonary embolism varies on the location and size of the clot, but common ones include: shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations or irregular heart beat, dizziness or fainting spells and fever.
Risk factors for the condition include poor blood flow caused by various reasons including obesity and immobility, as well as hypercoagulable states (a condition in which there is an abnormal increased tendency of blood clotting).
Pulmonary embolism typically occurs in patients with risk factors such as cancer, being bed bound, and patients who have had surgery, according to the National University Health System.
