Whoopi Goldberg is ready to return to the convent, but the wait for Sister Act 3 has tested her patience.
The EGOT winner has spent years working to bring a third instalment of the beloved franchise to life, but admits she is frustrated that the project has remained in development limbo.
Whoopi, 70, told People: “This is like seven, eight years now going on.”
Asked if she is as frustrated by the delays as fans are, the legendary entertainer did not hesitate, saying: “Yes, yes! Oh my God!”
The actress believes those involved in the project may not fully understand how meaningful the original films remain to audiences who grew up watching them.
Whoopi said: “I don’t think they really understand the relationship people have to Sister Act because everybody grew up with it. So, I think they’ll let us do it.
“I just hope it’s sooner rather than later because I’m getting old!”
The original Sister Act premiered in 1992 and starred Whoopi as Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer placed in witness protection after witnessing a murder.
Disguised as Sister Mary Clarence in a San Francisco convent, Deloris transforms the struggling choir and helps the nuns rediscover their voices.
The film became a major success, earning more than US$230 million (S$293 million) worldwide.
Whoopi returned in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, which reunited her with several original cast members while introducing new stars including 51-year-old Lauryn Hill (Rita Louise Watson) and 69-year-old Sheryl Lee Ralph (Florence Watson).
The popularity of both movies continued to grow through home video releases and television airings, eventually leading to plans for a third chapter.
Development on Sister Act 3 began more than a decade ago, with multiple writers attached over the years.
In 2020, Disney officially announced that Whoopi would return and produce the film alongside 57-year-old filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry, with plans for a Disney+ release.
However, progress has moved slowly. Whoopi has continued to provide updates, while Tyler previously admitted he was frustrated by the lengthy development process.
The project also faced a major loss with the death of Maggie Smith in 2024 at the age of 89.
Whoopi revealed that Maggie had been willing to return as Mother Superior before the production stalled.
Despite the setbacks, she remains determined to bring Deloris back.
Whoopi said: “It’s been a process, but I’m cautiously optimistic that we may see movement.”
Her goal remains simple: “I want to put those boots on. I want to put that hair on! I want to put on my habit! I am ready.”
