Hilary Duff appeared to get emotional as she sang a new track that fans think is about her older sister, Haylie Duff.

Hilary, 38, returned to the stage for her first headline performance in 18 years on Monday, January 19, at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. The former Lizzie McGuire star kicked off her Small Rooms, Big Nerves tour, treating fans to songs old and new.

The actress and singer performed several new tracks lifted from her upcoming album Luck … or Something, which marks her first studio LP in over a decade and is due for release on February 20.

One track titled “We Don’t Talk,” which appears to sample Gotye’s 2011 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” has got already got the internet talking.

On the emotional tune, Hilary sings, “Don’t know when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,” alluding to a fractured relationship.

She continues, “’Cause we come from the same home, same blood.”

“People ask me how you’re doing / I wanna say amazing, but the truth is that I don’t know / What I always end up saying is how … ” Hilary sings before launching into the chorus.

On the chorus, Hilary repeats the lines, “We don’t talk, we don’t talk about it / We don’t talk about anything anymore.”

During the second verse, Hilary alludes to some sort of rivalry, telling the subject of the song, “And if it’s ’cause you’re jealous / God knows I would sell it all, then break you off the bigger half.”

Later, Hilary sings, “Let’s have it out / I’ll hear you out, you’ll hear me out on the couch / Get back to how we were as kids / Let’s break it down / So sick of being so sad about / How we don’t talk and you won’t talk about it.”

Hilary did not share details about the song’s subject with the audience on Monday night, but as clips of her show began circulating on social media, fans pondered whether it is about Haylie, with whom Hilary hasn’t been pictured publicly since 2019.

“WOWW… Hilary Duff just sung We don’t talk and it’s 100% about Hailey. 👀 but not mean at all. Basically telling her to reach out,” one person wrote on X.

In November 2025, Hilary opened up about “family drama” in an interview with Rolling Stone discussing her musical comeback.

“I have this crazy connection with fans that I’ve known since I was 9, 10 years old, and I just want to connect with them again,” she said. “We have gone through a lot of the same things — whether that’s complicated relationships, anxiety, raising kids, divorces, trying to find yourself in adulthood, family drama … Finally, I felt safe enough and comfortable in my own family to step outside and open that part of myself up again.”

During Monday’s concert, Duff also serenaded fans with her hit songs “Wake Up” and “So Yesterday,” as well as her first live performance of “What Dreams Are Made Of” from The Lizzie McGuire Movie.
