A rocking start to Super Bowl LX.
Green Day performed during the opening ceremony that celebrated generations of Super Bowl MVPs including Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, and Peyton and Eli Manning.
The group, made up of Mike Dirnt, Billie Joe Armstrong and Tré Coo, returned to its home state and took the stage at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clarita, Calif. ahead of the big game.
Green Day kicked off the performance with “Holiday,” followed by “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “American Idiot.”
The group defied fans’ expectations and avoided making political statements in “Holiday” and “American Idiot,” despite their history of using their music to call out President Donald Trump and his policies.
The group also left out a politically charged and controversial bridge from ‘Holiday.”
Green Day’s Super Bowl performance was announced by the NFL on Jan. 18.
“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard,” Armstrong, 53, said in a press release. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”
Tim Tubito, NFL’s Director of Event Presentation & Content, said in the press release, “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL Legends who’ve helped define this sport is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.”
Donald Trump told The Post he was skipping the 2026 Super Bowl and called out Green Day and halftime performer Bad Bunny, who are outspoken critics of the president.
“I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible,” Trump said last month.
But Trump, who went to the Super Bowl last year, clarified that the reason he’s missing the game this year is because “it’s just too far away.”
“I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter,” he added.
One week before Trump’s remarks, Armstrong voiced support for anti-deportation protesters in Minnesota.
“I’m not a part of a redneck agenda. I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,” he said.
Months earlier, the Green Day frontman led an anti-Trump chant at the Rock Werchter festival on July 4, 2025.
“F– Donald Trump,” Armstrong encouraged the crowd to yell in the middle of the band’s performance of “Holiday.” He also tweaked the lyrics to “American Idiot,” singing, “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.”
Green Day formed in Rodeo, Calif. in 1987. The band has released 14 studio albums and won five Grammy Awards out of 19 nominations.
Their latest album, “Saviors,” came out over two years ago, on January 19, 2024.
The other Super Bowl 2026 performers include Charlie Puth, who is singing the national anthem, Brandi Carlile, who will perform “America the Beautiful,” and Coco Jones, who will sing “Life Every Voice and Sing.”
Bad Bunny, 31, is headlining the halftime show.
