George Clooney looked nearly unrecognizable while making his Broadway debut in  Good Night, And Good Luck, which officially opened on Thursday.

The former silver fox, who dyed his hair dark brown for his role as newsman Edward R. Murrow, turned heads with his new look on stage at the Winter Garden Theatre.

The audience was filled with familiar faces including Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman, Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford, Rande Gerber and Gayle King.

The actor is the latest Hollywood A-lister to feel compelled to darken up his hair amid an apparent ‘midlife crisis’ craze.

Leonardo DiCaprio previously showed off his darker brown hair when he made appearances during award season, and his dye job appeared to have gotten a boost earlier this week when he also appeared at CinemaCon to promote his upcoming collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson, titled One Battle After Another.

Even Ben Affleck has gotten in on the craze following his split from Jennifer Lopez last year.

Good Night, And Good Luck is adapted from the 2005 film of the same name, which George both directed and acted in – although the role of the middle-aged Murrow was played by the now 76-year-old David Strathairn.

Previously, George anticipated that his wife, Amal, and their twins, six, wouldn’t be so keen on the change in his appearance.

‘My wife is going to hate it because nothing makes you look older than when an older guy dyes his hair,’ George said during an interview with the New York Times in February. ‘My kids are going to just laugh at me nonstop.’

The Academy Award-winner and the British-Lebanese lawyer have been married since 2014.

In the show, he portrays CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow and has had to cover up his usual handsome salt-and-pepper hair with a dark brown dye.

In his 2005 film, David Strathairn had played the lead role, while Clooney took a supporting role as CBS President Fred Friendly, in addition to working behind the camera.

The movie, which was shot in black-and-white, focused on Murrow’s reports on Senator Joseph McCarthy’s unfounded claims of communist infiltration in the US government.

This leads to a fiery confrontation between the two men on Murrow’s CBS broadcast ahead of the senator’s humiliation at the Army–McCarthy hearings and subsequent censure from the Senate.

The all-star cast also included Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson, Frank Langella and Twin Peaks star Ray Wise.

Clooney’s film was a hit at the box office, grossing $54.6 million against a $7 million budget, and it earned six Oscar nominations, though it went home empty-handed.

In addition to taking over the lead role in Good Night, And Good Luck as his Broadway debut, Clooney has a high-profile film in the works.

He’s set to star in the ensemble feature dramedy Jay Kelly, marking his first appearance in a film directed by Barbie co-writer Noah Baumbach.

Clooney will be part of a massive case of A-listers, including Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Jim Broadbent, Baumbach’s wife Greta Gerwig and Emily Mortimer, who co-wrote the screenplay with Baumbach.

Few details have been revealed about the film, which will be released by Netflix, though it is reportedly a coming-of-age film.

Netflix hasn’t revealed the release strategy for later this year, but the streamer has previously given Baumbach’s films a limited theatrical release prior to their debut on the service.

Prior to his work with Gerwig on Barbie, Baumbach wrote and directed the Don DeLillo adaptation White Noise, the Oscar winner Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories for Netflix.
