Concern had been mounting over Frank Bruno’s wellbeing after the legend cancelled several events recently. It has now emerged that British boxing legend Frank Bruno has spent nearly two weeks in a Qatari hospital after falling seriously ill during a long-haul flight, forcing the cancellation of several public appearances – including one at Manchester’s Hotel Football.

The 63-year-old former world heavyweight champion was en route to Thailand, where he was scheduled to appear at four speaking events, when he suffered a medical emergency mid-air. Bruno had boarded a connecting flight from Heathrow to Doha when he suddenly ‘went downhill’ and began displaying worrying symptoms.

True Brit Bruno was flying out to Thailand for work when he fell ill on the plane at Doha. The medical crew on board helped the boxing legend and he was rushed to hospital immediately after landing. He’s currently recovering and reportedly looking forward to getting back to work as soon as possible.

Bruno’s condition was initially thought to be food poisoning, but things quickly took a more serious turn. According to reports, Bruno was fine when he boarded the plane, but quickly went downhill during the flight. His condition worsened and became concerning. Staff on the flight were unsure what the problem was… but he was sweating profusely and presented fever-like symptoms.

Bruno’s personal assistant, Paul Hunter, who was travelling with him, did his best to keep the sporting star calm as cabin crew and airport medics rushed to help. On landing in Doha, Bruno was taken to hospital for further tests, where doctors reportedly considered meningitis before finally diagnosing a viral infection.

Reports are indicating that Bruno’s passport has been withheld by authorities to prevent him from leaving hospital prematurely while undergoing treatment.

Fans were given a glimpse of Bruno’s upbeat spirit before take-off, when he posted on Facebook: “Morning so the Frank Bruno World tour continues. Up early for a plane, I don’t sleep well on planes but trying to catch up on some zzzzzzzzzzzs.”

The health scare comes as plans are underway to mark the 30th anniversary of Bruno’s legendary 1995 victory over Oliver McCall at Wembley, when he finally claimed the WBC world heavyweight title. He retired a year later after a bout with Mike Tyson, and has since become a passionate mental health campaigner following his own battles with bipolar disorder.

Despite this latest setback, Bruno’s team say he’s on the mend and eager to return to public life. His cancelled appearance at Hotel Football may be rescheduled once he’s back on his feet.

It’s not the comeback fans were hoping for – but the beloved British boxing icon has faced tougher fights before. Here’s hoping for Frank’s speedy recovery.
