Fann Wong and Christopher Lee are reuniting on the big screen after 17 years in the upcoming local 3D-styled animated feature film Library of Mystory.

Local production company Movitoir Studios announced on Sept 5 that they are producing the film, which is directed, written and self-funded by local author Chen Junhua from his 2016 book of the same name.

Library of Mystory is set in a vibrant fictional world inspired by the Tang dynasty and follows Prince Cheng Xi (Clement Yeo), a carefree young royal who prefers to spend his days on wrestling, archery, cuju (a Chinese ball game) and horse-riding than prepare for his royal responsibilities.

With his birthday approaching and an imperial tradition requiring him to announce his chosen bride, Cheng Xi’s parents, the Emperor (Christopher) and Empress (Fann) enrol him at Tanglin Academy.

At the prestigious school for young nobility, he meets Si Yu (Lea Chong), the intelligent and studious daughter of his lecturer, who is unimpressed by his royal status. When the unlikely pair stumble upon the hidden Library of Mystory, they uncover an ancient secret that could change their destinies and the fate of the empire.

The film marks the celebrity couple’s second appearance on the silver screen together, the first being their rom-com movie The Wedding Game in 2009, and is Christopher’s first animated feature role.

Fann previously lent her voice to the role of Snake in Singapore’s first 3D animated film Zodiac: The Race Begins (2006).

The couple, both 55, said in a press release: “This is our first time participating in animated voice acting together. For us, it has been a truly fresh and memorable experience. Being able to collaborate once again through our voices and portray the Emperor and Empress feels particularly special and meaningful.

“We were both drawn to the sincerity, imagination and bold creativity behind this project. It is also wonderful to see Singapore’s independent creators continuing to push boundaries and explore new possibilities for local animation.

“We feel truly honoured and excited to be part of this journey, and we hope audiences will enjoy stepping into this imaginative animated world.”

Movitoir Studios said Library of Mystory will combine human performances and original music with custom animation and rendering workflows developed by them.

The film features 100 per cent human voice performances, professional singers and human-composed original music, with musical production undertaken in collaboration with Xing Studio’s director Owenn Tan.

They added that Christopher and Fann were chosen because their experience, chemistry and interpretation bring warmth and personality to the Emperor and Empress, who are central to the characters.

The film is also produced with the studio’s partnership with emerging creative talents from the Animation & Games and Sound & Music specialisations at Singapore Polytechnic’s Media, Arts & Design School, as well as ITE College Central’s School of Design & Media.

Library of Mystory is slated for release in June 2027.
