Ex-TVB actress Margaret Chung was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre after suffering a sudden medical emergency on Sept 11, according to local media reports.
The 49-year-old, who is now a yoga instructor, subsequently released a statement in English and Chinese through Instagram that day, expressing gratitude for the well-wishes she had received “during this arduous period of my life”.
She wrote: “The compassion shown to me and my family has meant more than I can adequately express.
“At this time, my focus is on my health, being with the people I love and spending meaningful time with my family as we navigate this together.”
While acknowledging the public’s curiosity about her health, she urged them to respect her and her family’s privacy during this time.
She also thanked those who had reached out and offered prayers, saying their kindness and support had been “deeply felt and truly appreciated”.
The mother of two said: “For now, my priority is my health and my family. I hope everyone will understand our wish for privacy while allowing us the time and space to focus on one another. Thank you for your understanding, compassion and respect.”

Her close friend, singer-actress Toby Leung, was seen outside the ICU with takeaway food on Sept 12, and when approached by Hong Kong media, she reportedly said Margaret was “okay and good”.
Another close friend, Hong Kong actress Angela Tong, was spotted arriving at the hospital the following day. When asked about Margaret’s condition, Angela pleaded: “Could you please not put so much pressure on us? Thank you.”
“Our group of friends will be by her side to support and accompany her. We hope everyone can give her a little more space,” said actress Sherming Yiu, another of Margaret’s close friends.
The four women, as well as Charmaine Sheh, Janet Chow and Annie Man, are part of a close-knit circle of Hong Kong celebrities referred to as the “Seven Fairies”.
Netizens had expressed concern over Margaret’s health earlier this year after photos from a birthday gathering for Janet showed her looking noticeably slimmer.
Her friends later explained that she was down with the flu.
Margaret was born and raised in Toronto, moving to Hong Kong when she signed a contact with broadcaster TVB in 1997. She has acted in dramas such as Untraceable Evidence (1997), Justice Sung II (1998) and Triumph in the Skies (2003). Her last drama was the 2006 Summer Heat.
