Emilia Pérez is continuing to break records this awards season.
With the 2025 Oscar nominations coming in thick and fast Thursday afternoon, presented by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical triumphed once again.
The Netflix film picked up 13 Oscar nominations including best actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), best director (Audiard), best supporting actress (Zoe Saldaña) adapted screenplay, music (original score) makeup and hairstyling, cinematography and best picture. It also earned France a best international feature film nomination, making Emilia Pérez the most nominated film not in the English language at the Oscars.
Gascón, the first trans star to be nominated for an Oscar and The Hollywood Reporter‘s recent cover star, is up against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) in her category, though will be feeling somewhat optimistic given her Golden Globes win earlier this month.
Though it was Demi Moore who won best actress for The Substance at the Globes. Addressing the loss backstage, Gascón said: “Of course, I’m very happy for this strive, for this benchmark that we just hit. But I had to admit it’s a little bittersweet because it feels incomplete. But at the same time, I’m so happy for Demi because in Cannes, she was in my shoes. She saw me on stage, accepting the award, and I think now we are tied. And now we need to break the tie.”
The winners will be unveiled at the Academy Awards‘ ceremony on Sunday, March 3.
