It’s that time of year again we’ve got to be extra careful with whatever we see or hear on Apr 1, because it just might be fake news.

Some brands have come up with witty and creative April Fool’s jokes this year, and we’d have to admit we almost fell for some of them.

Here’s a round-up of several pranks that caught our eye.

Allen key bling

Those who have assembled their own Ikea furniture would recognise an Allen key.

While the Swedish furniture giant’s new jewellery drop is inspired by the tool (and looks functional), it isn’t real, unfortunately.

Called the Allenki, the metal necklace is described as “hardware meets heirloom”.

“You’d be a fool to throw this away,” wrote Ikea.

Cucumber americano

Singapore’s sweltering heat calls for some refreshing drinks.

Luckin Coffee’s Cucumber Americano could have been the answer to the hot weather, but unfortunately, the drink is an April Fool’s prank.

There’s even a disclaimer in their social media posts warning “do not order via Luckin Coffee app” in case customers thought it was a real drink.

Durian mala

After requesting more food options on campus, Nanyang Polytechnic students finally have a new limited-time menu item: Mala with a durian twist.

Unfortunately, it will only be sold on a date that doesn’t exist: April 31.

In an Instagram post, the school announced plans to sell the dish during a one-day pop-up, available in both dry and soup options.

Floating stage

Punggol residents, don’t get too excited because the “new floating stage” at Waterway Point isn’t real.

In an Instagram post, the mall claimed that it is making waves with a floating stage birthday festival on April 1, complete with fireworks and performances.

Grimace protein shakes

Gym bros, we hope you didn’t get too excited when you saw this social media post by McDonald’s.

The fast food chain claimed to have created a new protein shake inspired by Grimace, their lovable, rotund mascot.

“Guess we’re shaking things up, the Grimace way. Tag your gym buddy,” wrote McDonald’s.

If it’s any consolation, you can always grab the viral Grimace Shake instead.

Indoor cable cars

VivoCity is a massive mall and it can be hard to get from one point to another sometimes.

While the mall announced that it is installing “one-day-only” indoor cable cars so shoppers can “walk less, shop more”, it is an April Fool’s joke.

Kaya fondue

Can’t get enough of kaya? Then you may be disappointed to hear that the kaya fondue from Ya Kun Kaya Toast isn’t real.

The local cafe brand marketed it as a good option for weddings, office parties, and “anyone who believes meals should be dramatic”.

Limo shuttle services

Shuttle buses are a lifesaver for getting from place to place, and Marina Square said it will upgrade its shuttle buses to shuttle limousines for just one day.

But don’t get too excited because it is April Fool’s Day after all.

Mala Powder Milkshake

Milkshake with a hint of spice? That’s what Shilin Taiwan Street Food Singapore is offering as a “new menu item”.

The brand shared on social media that it had launched a Mala Powder Milkshake that is both creamy and spicy.

It may be a good thing that this drink isn’t real because it sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Micro popcorn bags

Ever wanted a bag of popcorn for snacking on the go?

Garrett Popcorn announced the launch of micro popcorn bags containing one kernel, sold at $1 each.

Marketed as diet-friendly, budget-friendly, and travel-friendly, the popcorn specialist said that the treat is the perfect option for a “small, quick fix”.

Nasi lemak egg tarts

Egg tarts topped with fragrant coconut rice, homemade sambal, ikan bilis, peanuts and cucumbers sound absolutely delicious.

However, the Nasi Lemak Egg Tarts by Oriental Kopi Asia is a prank.

Pepperoni Pizza Max Pro

Love pepperoni pizza? We are sorry to break the news to you, but the Pepperoni Pizza Max Pro by Dominos Singapore isn’t real.

The advertisement shows a pizza covered by a massive, singular slice of pepperoni.

“Why have many when you can have the one,” the fast food chain wrote cheekily.

Space-friendly moonlight hor fun

Ever wondered why moonlight hor fun is named as such? Apparently, it’s meant to be eaten on the moon.

Keng Eng Kee has creatively come up with Kek Moonlight Hor Fun (Space Edition), where the popular tze char dish is vacuum sealed and apparently astronaut-approved.

“Launching on April 1… or is it?” the local brand teased on social media.
