Don Lemon suggested that it may be time for Matt Lauer‘s comeback, claiming, “The public loves him.”

On a recent episode of the Hollywood Raw podcast, the former CNN anchor opened up about his friendship with the disgraced journalist. NBC fired Lauer from the Today show in 2017 following sexual harassment allegations from a former employee. Other women later came forward with similar allegations.

“I only got to know Matt after, you know, the whole situation happened and because we live in the same town and we have mutual friends,” Lemon said. “Whenever I see Matt out and about, or, you know, even with us, if we go out to dinner, my husband and I will go out to dinner with him and his fiancé. And people love him.”

“Women love him. They’re like, ‘Matt, oh my God, can I get a picture? I love you. I miss you on television,’” he continued. “And so I think the public loves him.”

Lemon, who now hosts his own show, The Don Lemon Show, suggested that if Lauer returns, he could “set his own course” on a digital platform.

He claimed that while the “public misses him,” other “people inside the business” might be “afraid” of any backlash they could receive if they hired him.

However, Lemon said now that “[being] canceled is over” with Donald Trump back in the White House, “Maybe there is a way that he’ll come back. But I think it’s more of the people who are inside of the business who are concerned about what happened with Matt.”

Two years after NBC fired Laurer, Ronan Farrow released her 2019 book, Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators, which included former NBC employee Brooke Nevils’ on-the-record accusations, alleging he raped her in his hotel room in Sochi during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Laurer has denied all allegations.
