Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on Sunday. This news came as a big shock for everyone. He passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His family has confirmed the news today morning. He has been hospitalized in San Francisco for the last two weeks due to heart related problems.

Many celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Malaika Arora, Rahul Vaidya and others have paid tributes to the Tabla maestro through social media. He won Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Grammy Awards.

Zakir Hussain was in love with music since childhood. However, he had once shared that his mother was against his choice of taking music as career. Because of the same reason, Zakir Hussain once ran away from his house at the age of 6. He spoke about this incident on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal.

He shared that he decided to run away from the house with a woman named Pujaran. He said that Pujaran was one of the ladies who was in our house and looked after us. He ran away from the house because he must have been very disappointed with his mother.

He shared, “So I told Pujaran, ‘Let’s just run away.’ She used to sing a bit. So I told her, ‘You sing, I will play and we will make a living. Let’s just run away from home.” He further shared he packed his school bag and was ready to go but he didn’t leave.

He added that his guru, his father, Alla Rakha, was the reason he couldn’t give up on his home. He said that it was not the thought of food but the love for his father that stopped him from leaving.
