Delhi High Court REJECTS Major Mohit Sharma’s family’s application for…, instructs CBFC to consider…

The Dhurandhar trailer ignited assertions that Ranveer Singh’s role resembles Ashok Chakra recipient Major Mohit Sharma. The family of the martyr approached the Delhi High Court, claiming that the filmmakers ‘commercially profited’ from their son’s life. Justice Sachin Datta has instructed the Board to address the family’s complaint prior to approving the film. As per Live Law, the Delhi High Court has rejected Major Mohit Sharma’s family’s application for a private viewing of Dhurandhar, pointing out that the film is currently awaiting approval from the CBFC. The court has instructed the Board to consider the family’s concerns and has allegedly recommended that, if necessary, the issue be sent to an expert authority within the Indian Army for additional review.

What are the wishes of Major Mohit Sharma’s Family?

The family of Major Mohit Sharma is requesting a full stay on Dhurandhar’s release. They also desire a private viewing of the film, access to the screenplay, footage, and marketing videos. In addition to this, the family has asked for a pause in the movie’s promotion until all issues are settled.

Sushila Sharma and Rajendra Prasad Sharma, Sharma’s family, assert that the film Dhurandhar is ‘based on true events’ and depicts their son’s surgery and sacrifices without their consent. Raising concerns under Article 21, their advocate said in the plea, “The true legal test is not whether the respondents verbally deny such linkage, but whether a reasonable, ordinary viewer, upon viewing the trailer, promotional material, character design, military background, operational narrative, visual portrayal and storyline would unmistakably identify the protagonist with the real-life decorated martyr (sic).”

Aditya Dhar’s clarification

Filmmaker Aditya Dhar took to X to say, “”our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM (sic).”
He added, “This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us (sic).”
