Dave Hughes has responded to the backlash he received after admitting he urinated in a fellow Melbourne comedian’s glass at a comedy club.
The stand-up comedian, 55, appeared on Nova 96.9’s Ricki-Lee & Tim on Thursday morning and promised the hosts he would never repeat the behaviour.
He explained he resorted to desperate measures because he could not find a bathroom backstage at the venue before he was set to take to the stage.
‘I’m taking you back to 2022, there’s a venue at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and backstage there is no toilet. To go to the toilet you have to walk through 300 people,’ Dave began.
‘It’s a minute before showtime and you have got to go! So you see a glass and go in it! You’re on your own back there, you’re not exposing yourself to anyone.’
‘Then you walk to the toilet holding the glass and people get selfies with you holding a glass of your own urine! I washed the glass and someone told me it belonged to another performer at the venue… that’s not good!’

He added that he had not thought about the situation in years until fellow comedian Melanie Bracewell made the shock claim on TikTok earlier this week.
‘Then you don’t think about it again for four years until it comes up in a comment in someone’s Instagram and all of a sudden you’re the worst person in the world,’ he said.
‘I’m just trying to get through my life, guys. I’ll never do it again… I only did it a couple of times!’
On Sunday, Bracewell shocked her followers when she recalled how Hughes urinated in her drinking glass ahead of one of his stand-up comedy performances.
‘The first time we met he peed in one of the glasses I use on stage because he couldn’t get out to the bathroom,’ she began.
She then claimed the shock incident was not a one-off occasion.
‘He does this regularly and wait staff have to clean it up.’
Hughes confirmed to Daily Mail that her claims were true, but admitted he did it to avoid a nasty on-stage accident.

‘I’ve done it maybe four times in my life before solo shows when the backstage had no toilet… I didn’t want to wet myself onstage,’ he began.
‘Absolutely never when anyone else was around, that would be terrible! I certainly don’t look for glasses to pee in as a way to pass time.’
Hughes added that other comedians had previously ‘roasted’ him about it and he wasn’t aware they took the matter so seriously.
‘Peter Helliar had a go at me about it once and I think Mel was in the same venue. I asked her to come on my radio show and roast me about it, she did, we all laughed a lot,’ he said.
‘Had no idea she was so aghast. She did a great job joining in the group ridicule of me, and then we gave her tour and TV show a big plug.’
