Dave Hughes has shared his battle with skin cancer, revealing on Thursday that he has had five cancerous lesions removed.

The comedian stood shirtless in the street in a video shared on Instagram, in which he displayed his many bandages after undergoing surgical treatment earlier that day.

The 55-year-old further explained in his caption that he’d received 45 stitches to close the wounds.

‘I had five skin cancers cut off today,’ Dave said in the clip, before explaining that he was soldiering on and driving to his comedy gig in Cowes, Victoria that night.

‘I’m going to Cowes. It’s a two and a half hour drive away. I’ve got a gig there tonight. People need me. I’ve gotta be there. If I don’t go, they don’t have fun,’ he insisted.

The funnyman added that he also needed the pay, so had to head to work even if he should technically take a break to recover.

‘If I don’t go, I don’t get paid. But you know what? It’s a gig economy. I can’t have a month off,’ he said.

Dave then got into his car to drive to Cowes despite not feeling his best.

‘What’s 45 stitches between friends?’ Dave added in his caption, referring to the number of sutures he had received.

Dave is currently touring Australia for his new stand-up show, Cooked.

The television star has had a brush with skin cancer before, undergoing surgery to have skin cancers removed by Melbourne dermatologist Jeremy Banky in 2021.

He also had surgery to remove skin cancers in 2017.

‘I got my skin checked and had a couple of cancers cut out. There were parts that had to be sliced and diced, but I’m all good,’ Hughes told the Herald Sun in 2021.

‘If you get skin cancers cut out early, it doesn’t lead to other things.’

Hughes blamed the harsh Australian sun for his repeated trips to the dermatologist.

‘My skin is not meant for this climate. I always joke I should be in Ireland picking potatoes,’ he said.

‘My wife, (Holly) is always banging on at me about getting my skin checked. She wants to keep me alive, which is nice.’

Dave urged his fans to get their own skin checked regularly to safeguard against cancer.

‘Doctors are waiting to check you now,’ he encouraged.
