Comedian Jeff Ross was hospitalized over the weekend after having an allergic reaction to ice cream.

“ROAST ME. TONIGHT’S SHOW NEAR SAN FRANCISCO MUST GO ON ! Had such a fun opening night performance of @takeabananafortheride up here in Mill Valley, California @throckmortontheatre,” Ross, 59, captioned an Instagram post on Sunday, April 6. “Afterwards, me and the band celebrated with some Burata [sic] ice cream at a restaurant down the street courtesy of the nice owner.”

Ross noted that the dish was “delicious” and “seriously yummy” but sent him to the hospital.

“My lips blew up and I spent the entire night in the ER. It was my first allergic reaction ever. I guess that’s pretty remarkable considering I’m constantly shoving whatever food is in front of me into my face,” the comedian continued. “Thank you to the overnight shift at MarinHealth Medical Center for only roasting me a lightly. DESPITE LOOKING LIKE MICKEY ROURKE at the end of ‘The Wrestler’… I WILL BE TAKING A NAP AND BACK ON STAGE HERE IN MILL VALLEY NEAR SAN FRANCISCO AT 730pm TONIGHT.”

Ross shared several images of his face following the reaction. He seemed to be in good spirits and was smiling during his hospital trip in one selfie.

The incident came after Ross performed his Take a Banana for the Ride stand-up show in San Francisco on Saturday, April 5. Despite his hospitalization, the comedian took the stage on Sunday.

Several of Ross’ celebrity friends took to the comments section of Sunday’s Instagram post and shared their reactions to his swollen lip.

“Didn’t even notice a difference,” fellow comedian Josh Wolf wrote. Actor Tom Green, meanwhile, sent well-wishes, writing, “Ouch! Get well soon Jeff!”

Joey Fatone also weighed in on the reaction.

“Sloth love chunk … and I can always be your chunk,” he commented. “Speedy recovery my brother.”

Bob Saget’s widow, Kelly Rizzo, had a message as well.

“Oh no! How dare burrata do that to you!?!?” she shared. “Hope you’re better already! Love you!”

Famed director Michael Bay also weighed in on the incident.

“You are now Cast-able,” he quipped. “Next movie, we will get you The ice cream to keep the look! Awesome!”

Ross is known for being the Roastmaster General for hosting several celebrity roasts of years past. Most recently, he took the Netflix stage in May 2024 to help some major stars poke fun at Tom Brady during The Roast of Tom Brady.

Ross made a joke about Brady’s relationship with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, which caused some tension with the former NFL star. (Brady played 20 seasons with the Patriots during his football career.)

“Don’t say that s*** again,” Brady could be heard telling Ross after the joke, which shed light on Kraft’s past massage scandal.

“I Love Robert Kraft,” Ross said after his joke at the time.
