Christopher Nolan has broken his own box office record as The Odyssey became the director’s highest grossing movie ever.
The film passed the $1billion mark over the weekend and has now made $1.1billion at the worldwide box office, overtaking his 2012 blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08billion) and 2009’s The Dark Knight ($1billion). Oppenheimer ($975million) ended just shy of the milestone.
Matt Damon portrays the protagonist Odysseus as he faces a dangerous voyage home to Ithaca following the Trojan War and meets creatures such as the cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens and the nymph Calypso along the way.
The Universal Pictures release added $31.5million in its fourth weekend.
The Odyssey has become Imax’s highest grossing domestic release of all time, making $147.3million on the company´s large-format screens.

The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which both star reported newlyweds Tom Holland and Zendaya, have helped drive Hollywood to its best box-office year since the pandemic.
Ticket sales are running 18.5 per cent ahead of last year according to data from Rentrak. There have already been five $1billion movies – more than any year since 2019 – including Toy Story 5, Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Sony-Marvel release has accrued $1.67billion worldwide in just ten days of release, putting it on a trajectory to be among the biggest blockbusters ever.
Domestically, no movie has racked up a higher total faster. In US and Canadian cinemas, Brand New Day has grossed $655.1million thus far. Overseas, it’s already surpassed $1billion.
It took only seven days for Spider-Man to become the highest grossing movie of the year, easily displacing Toy Story 5 ($1.07billion worldwide).

The Odyssey has achieved a near-perfect score on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with a current standing of 94 per cent, placing Nolan’s 13th feature film at the top of the pile, with The Dark Knight also achieving a 94 per cent critic score.
The reviews for The Odyssey are almost universal in their soaring praise and five star ratings.
The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner declared that ‘Nolan’s film – its star-studded cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Zendaya – is a glorious cinematic experience, a triumph both of story-telling and movie-making.’
Viner added ‘I rarely say this of movies nearly three hours long – one viewing simply isn’t enough.’
