Rob Zangardi knows great outerwear is never “out.”
After decades as one of the most prominent celebrity stylists in the game — with clients including Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington and Suki Waterhouse — he launched his own coat collection, Auter, in 2025.
“[My clients] taught me that luxury has to feel good, and comfort is never optional,” he told Page Six Style, saying he had trouble finding “fashion-first outerwear” before starting his brand.
He clearly wasn’t the only one looking for luxe layers, as stars like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian (to name but a few) have all worn Auter in its first year on the market.
“Every fitting taught me something about what people actually reach for, what makes them feel confident and what may look beautiful but does not work in real life,” Zangardi said.
So with fall on the way, there’s perhaps no better person to ask about upgrading our cool-weather wardrobes. Below, the star stylist dishes on which outerwear trends we’ll be seeing everywhere this season — from a throwback silhouette to faux fur that looks real luxe.
The peacoat is back — and better than ever
“The peacoat is one of those pieces that never really disappears, but this fall it feels much more fashion-forward. The new versions are oversized and sculptural, with rounded shapes, strong collars and unexpected lengths. The Auter Italian Wool Peacoat, which Taylor Swift wore, has a pleat just under the bum that gives it shape without making it feel fitted. Classic does not mean boring. It means the proportions have to be right.”

His coat on you
“Oversized coats were everywhere on the fall runways. Dropped shoulders, longer lengths and proportions that feel borrowed from the men’s department. It always looks cooler when it feels a little stolen. Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Hudson have all worn our men’s coats, which proves the point better than I ever could.”

Bring the drama
“After several seasons of restraint, I think people are ready to have fun again. A dramatic coat gives you volume and texture, then everything underneath can be incredibly simple. My favorite way to wear one is honestly over a sweatsuit. Let the coat do all the work. The Fox Jacket has been worn by Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande, among many others, including Aryna Sabalenka, Charli XCX and Gwen Stefani.”

Belt everything
“Belted coats were all over the runways for fall. Wearing a coat loose gives you volume and comfort. Cinching the same coat completely changes the proportion and gives it a new attitude. It doesn’t have to be the belt that came with the coat. Try a leather belt, something vintage, or whatever changes the shape. A belt is cheaper than a new personality and nearly as effective.”
