Malayalam film Marco, which has been referred to as the most violent movie ever made in the language, have been denied satellite streaming rights. The regional office of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has turned down the plea by its producers for category conversion from ‘A’ certificate to ‘UA’ for obtaining TV rights. T Nadeem Thufali, regional officer of CBFI, confirmed to PTI that the regional examination committee had rejected the application of Marco producers for category conversion on February 19.
The film, which had hit the theatres on December 20, 2024, features Unni Mukundan in key role and has emerged one of the biggest grossers with an ‘A’ certificate. Since February 14, the film has been streaming on OTT platform SonyLiv. As reported by PTI, Thufali confirmed that the satellite rights were given to films with either ‘U’ or ‘UA’ certificates. As mentioned by Thufali, the films are categorized and certified based on the basis of their content.
Besides mentioning that parents have to ensure that children do not watch movies with extreme violence, Thufali stressed on the fact that the committee recommended to the Centre that the movie’s streaming be prohibited on the OTT platform. “However, CBFC has no regulatory powers on OTT streaming,” he added.
Censor Board member G M Mahesh said several private complaints were filed by citizens believing that CBFC has powers to check the OTT streaming. “That is why we have made a formal request at the ministerial level,” he told PTI.
