Nicola Coughlan admits that one family member wasn’t too thrilled with her steamy scenes in Bridgerton.
The actress, who plays Penelope Featherington in the hit Netflix show, recently opened up on The Graham Norton Show about playing a more mature character in the hit Netflix show’s third season.
“I realized I was 35 when I was filming the season, and I’d never played an adult. I was like, ‘How do I do this?’” she explained. “[In] the first two [Bridgerton] series, I looked a lot like Spongebob Squarepants, very curly, ginger [hair], yellow dress, sort a of a tent situation going on.”
Coughlan continued, “But then it was weird having to play the romantic lead and then knowing it was all because — it’s a sexy show. A lot of sexy things happen in it, and then I realized I was going to have to do the sexy things and I was like, ‘Right.’”
The historical romance drama follows eight siblings of the Bridgerton family as they look for love and happiness in London high society, with each season focused on a sibling. Bridgerton season three centered on the friends-to-lovers storyline between Coughlan’s character and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton.
The Derry Girls star added that once her mom learned she was going to be filming several intimate scenes for season three, she wasn’t too happy.
“My mother was so mad at me about those scenes — as if they were my fault, so I didn’t go to the screening with her,” the actress said, per the London Evening Standard.
Coughlan has previously talked about taking some creative control over the season’s intimacy scenes, notably with the famous mirror scene from the book the show is based on.
“There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body. It was amazingly empowering,” she told Stylist in May. “I felt beautiful in the moment, and I thought: ‘When I’m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how fucking hot I looked!’”
