Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 has zoomed past the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office after just 17 days in release. It’s only the second film of 2025 so far to achieve that feat behind fellow Disney blockbuster Lilo & Stitch.

Moreover, it did so in the shortest amount of time among all animated Hollywood releases and all PG-rated films. 

The buddy-cop sequel crossed the $1 billion mark on Friday at the global box office after only 17 days in release after finishing Thursday with a stunning globally haul of $986.1 million, including $232.7 million domestically and $753.4 million overseas.

It also marks the first back-to-back billion-dollar releases for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following last year’s Moana 2. The studio now counts five billion-dollar titles since 2013 between the Frozen, Moana and Zootopia series.

Zootopia 2 opened on November 26 to a record-breaking $559.5 million in five days, becoming the highest global animated opening of all time, the highest global debut of 2025, and the highest global opening for any animated film in Disney history. In addition, it stands as the No. 1 international MPA release of the year.

Today, the film stands as the No. 2 MPA release of all time in the country, behind Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame,” with more than $447 million. The Walt Disney Studios now also holds three of the top five highest-grossing MPA titles ever released in the Chinese market. ‘

The list of records shattered by the sequel are many: In China. It is the country’s highest animated opening of all time for a non-local title – with a massive $272 million – and the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time, which was achieved in only five days.

The Thanksgiving tentpole has also reignited in the franchise, driving record viewership of Zootopia and Zootopia+.
