BBC Radio 2 star Nigel Ogden has died aged 71.

Nigel, who hosted beloved show The Organist Entertains for 39 years, passed away ‘suddenly’, it was announced on Tuesday. 

His caused of death has not yet be confirmed. 

A spokesperson for BBC Radio 2 confirmed Nigel’s passing: ‘We were saddened to hear of the passing of former presenter Nigel Ogden, who hosted ‘The Organist Entertains’ for many years.

‘He was much loved by our listeners. We send our condolences to his family at this sad time.’

Nigel presented the much loved musical show for nearly four decades until it was taken off air in 2018.

Following his exit, Nigel went onto present The Organist Encores podcast for five years. 

Heartfelt tributes have flooded in since Nigel’s passing, with friends and colleagues issuing statements on social media.

The Organist Encores wrote on Facebook: ‘We’re so very sorry to pass on the news that Nigel Ogden passed away yesterday.

‘Nigel was, for 39 years, host of the Organist Entertains on BBC Radio.

‘When that was axed he spent another 5 years delving into his archive for this podcast.

‘He was always so very supportive to Damon and the team, and we will remember his friendship, humour and first-class musicianship.’

Musical trust Bells & Whistles – St Helens also paid a touching tribute, penning: ‘We are very saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend Nigel Ogden.

‘Nigel has supported us from day one and was the first organist to appear in concert…

‘He often visited for a private play when the Christie was still in its early stages of completion.

‘His enthusiasm was a real tonic and we thank him dearly for this. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.’

Alongside his presenting duties, Nigel composed his own music and toured as a musician.

He was recognised as Britain’s most famous organist and played in theatres, churches and even Channel 4’s musical drama Lipstick On Your Collar.
