Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning has said she’s never been in a relationship but is ‘a big believer in love’ since coming out four years ago.
The actress, 40, rose to fame playing stalker Martha alongside Richard Gadd in the hit Netflix show.
In a new interview Jessica described the moment in 2022 when she happened to be chatting with a lesbian who was speaking about the moment when she’d realised she was gay.
She spoke to The Sunday Times about the interaction and the realisation it gave her, saying: ‘And then I was, like… I’m gay! Everyone around me was gay. I just didn’t think I could be.’
Asked why she hadn’t recognised her own sexuality before she said: ‘I think it’s because I’ve never been in a relationship before. With anyone.’
She added: ‘I didn’t want to go out with guys and so I was finding a way to avoid it. I never knew how to flirt, I didn’t get it. It didn’t feel like I was lonely. I lived with my best mate. So I didn’t feel like I was lacking anything.’

Jessica did however admit that going 36 years without having sex was difficult before explaining her lack of a romantic relationship ‘felt connected to her size’.
She described how it felt ‘like an otherness’ which she says protected her from having to admit she didn’t like men and instead say it didn’t feel like the right time for her to date.
The star went on to reveal that since Baby Reindeer came out she has dated a little but is currently single.
While she is a ‘big believer in love’ she isn’t keen on using dating apps and is more of an old fashioned romantic at heart.
Jessica will next star as as Dame Washalot in the film adaptation of Enid Blyton classic The Faraway Tree alongside Nicola Coughlan, Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield.
Based on the series of novels, it follows Polly (Claire) and Tim Thompson (Andrew) and their children, Beth, Joe and Fran, who find themselves forced to relocate to the remote English countryside.
There, the children discover a magical tree and its extraordinary and eccentric occupants.

Adapted by BAFTA Award-winner Simon Farnaby (Wonka, Paddington 2), the movie is directed by Ben Gregor and production wrapped earlier this year, taking place on location across the South of England and at Shinfield Studios, Reading.
