Is Jack Black the new Margot Robbie? Not quite.
During her 2023 “Barbie” press tour, the Australian beauty was so dedicated to emulating the doll that her red carpet looks were eventually turned into a coffee table book. She’s continued pushing the envelope with her steamy “Wuthering Heights” tour de force earlier this year, covering herself in hundreds of carats of diamonds and even faux hair.
Zendaya, too, has dominated premieres around the world, working with stylist Law Roach on epic, themed looks for “Dune,” “Challengers” and, currently, “The Drama.”
However, the stars of the “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” are taking method dressing in totally different directions.
The cast appeared at a photocall in Tokyo Thursday, celebrating the animated movie in a dizzying array of colorful clothes. There was Jack Black, channeling his character in a Bowser costume straight from Spirit Halloween and Keegan-Michael Key in a suit covered with “Super Mario Bros.” characters — and a polka-dotted hat just to drive home the Mushroom People connection.
While Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Charlie Day (Luigi) and Donald Glover (Yoshi) all wore more understated looks — with the film’s lead, Chris Pratt, wearing a gray suit paired with bright red Mario-adjacent Adidas sneakers — Anya Taylor-Joy channeled Princess Peach in high-fashion style.
The “Furiosa” actress chose a custom Jacquemus three-piece look that included a bandeau top that bared her abs, a dramatic pencil skirt and an oversized hat all in a peachy shade, of course.
Taylor-Joy is a fashion industry darling — and no stranger to method dressing herself. While promoting the “Mad Max” prequel she wore bold, futuristic looks featuring frayed edges and edgy lace-up details.
She even sported a minidress made entirely of metal and, later, an apocalyptic-chic couture dress and matching headpiece covered in spears for the film’s May 2024 premiere.
For a special screening of the original “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” she was in fighting shape in a pink leather jumpsuit with matching thigh-high boots and gloves. Naturally, the look was custom Dior.
At the same 2023 event, Jack Black wore a (slightly) more subtle tribute to Bowser, rocking a flame-trimmed suit with a spiked shell on his back in an ode to the King of the Koopas.
With press for the video game movie already going viral after Taylor-Joy was asked to compare Princess Peach and Joni Mitchell, we expect even more flashy fashion to come.
