General Hospital star Anthony Geary’s husband, Claudio Gama, is speaking out after the death of his longtime love.
“Today, we said our last goodbyes to Tony. He is now resting up where the stars shine bright,” Gama wrote via Instagram on Monday, December 22. “He will always be missed. His love, his life, his art speaks for itself. Me, Max and the family would like to thank all of Tony’s friends and colleagues for the wonderful support and respect you have shown Tony.”
His statement continued, “To all of Tony’s fans, thank you so much for the wonderful words of support and condolences.”
Gama previously confirmed Geary’s death to TV Insider on December 15. He was 78.
“It was a shock for me and our families and our friends,” Gama said in a statement at the time. “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
According to Gama, Geary died in the Netherlands on December 14, three days after undergoing an operation.
In his latest post, Gama expressed gratitude to fans who made Geary’s career so rewarding.
“He always told me everything he did as an actor [and] as an artist was for his fans,” he wrote via Instagram. “Without your love and support, he would have never reached the heights he did in his career. Acting was his passion as was dancing, singing, drink cola, payday candy bars and cats. He loved his country and his second home of Amsterdam. Thank you all.”

Prior to Geary’s death, he and Gama were married for six years and together for 30 years. The couple celebrated their anniversary in February.
“Greetings and happy week to all from Amsterdam,” Gama wrote via Instagram at the time. “This week is our anniversary week. Tony and I met 30 years ago in February and got married six years ago also on February. Two anniversary’s [sic] to celebrate. I have to find a good gift and make some special food.”
Gama shared his final Instagram post with Geary on December 5.
“Greetings from us in Amsterdam. It’s Sinterklaas today in the Netherlands,” Gama captioned a photo of himself and Geary cuddling on their couch. “We give chocolate letters to each other. I did some work, now home with [the couple’s cat] Max watching UK championships snooker. Tony went to see Wicked 2 with his best mate. Tonight no cooking, going to a restaurant with Hugo, weekend free. Have a warm healthy and safe Friday and weekend.”
One week later, Gama revealed Geary was out of town, presumably due to his operation.
“Friday night I had a long day,” he noted on Friday, December 12. “Now relaxing no cooking today. Tony is away returns Monday.”
The day of Geary’s death, Gama gave his Instagram followers an update on himself before learning that his husband had died.
“Good morning from a lovely late autumn early winter day in Amsterdam,” he wrote. “No plans today, just sitting around with my needle work, TV and Max cuddles. Tomorrow another busy week starts so best enjoy the peace and quiet. Have a warm safe and healthy Sunday.”
Geary was best known for his role as Luke Spencer on General Hospital, which he originated in 1978. He left the ABC soap in 1984 but later returned in 1993. He retired from his series regular position on the show in 2015. Geary made his final appearance on General Hospital in May 2017.
In May 2015, Geary explained his exit from the soap opera after nearly four decades.
“I’ve been thinking about it for 10 years,” he told A Spoonful of Paolo at the time. “Ever since I found the place where my heart is, which is the city of Amsterdam. I never felt as comfortable or as authentic as I have felt there.”
He added: “One of the reasons I became an actor is that I felt not at home in my skin and not really comfortable with the people I grew up around, and it became a sanctuary for me to live in my imagination. In Amsterdam, I find the whole city is just a big playground for my imagination and I feel very comfortable there.”
