Anna Wintour attended the US Open Monday, appearing somber just hours after designer John Galliano announced he’s pulling out of the 2027 Met Gala following intense backlash.
The legendary former Vogue editor watched the match between Ben Shelton and Tallon Griekspoor. She wore a green and white button-up dress with a standout collar, accessorizing with a colorful necklace and big black sunglasses. Her hair was, of course, styled in her iconic bob.
Wintour, 76, didn’t appear to be in a cheerful mood, looking downcast in the pics obtained by Page Six.
Galliano announced he will no longer be honored at the 2027 Met Gala Monday on Instagram, choosing to bow out after facing severe backlash over his past offensive behavior. The designer was caught on video making antisemitic and racist remarks in a Paris café in 2011, and he later entered addiction treatment.
Gallioano shared in part, “I do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute. I also recognise and respect that an exhibition honouring my work would be painful for some.”
The British designer, 65, apologized again for his past racist outbursts.
“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry,” he shared.
Wintour, who has served as the lead chairperson of the Met Gala since 1995, shared her support for him in a statement from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Monday.
“John’s decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is,” she said. “I believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support.”
But Wintour is feeling the fallout over her decision to honor Galliano — whom she remained a staunch supporter of even after his controversies — at next year’s Met Gala in the first place.
Condé Nast insiders have been labeling her seriously out of touch, sources told The Post.
“This is a big tone-deaf moment,’’ one source said. “People are questioning her judgment.”
Wintour’s employees are also allegedly majorly embarrassed over the scandal.
“There were definitely people who had concerns, but no one wanted to challenge her directly, and now people are mortified by how this was handled,” a Condé Nast insider told Page Six.
