Angelina Jolie has sold the historic Los Angeles mansion where she raised her six children for US$24.75 million (S$31.66 million) as she prepares for a new chapter away from the city.
The Oscar-winning actress, 51, has found a buyer for the 1,021 sq m Los Feliz estate formerly owned by Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille, according to People and property records cited by TMZ.
Angelina bought the six-bedroom, 10-bathroom property for US$24.5 million in 2017 and listed it for US$29.85 million in May, meaning the eventual sale price came in more than US$5 million below the asking price.
Angelina previously told The Hollywood Reporter of raising her family there: “When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety.
“I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be … that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here.”
She also said she had remained in Los Angeles “because I have to be here from a divorce”, adding she intended to spend time in Cambodia once her youngest children reached adulthood.
Angelina filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, 62, in 2016 after two years of marriage and more than a decade together.
The former couple have six children — Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18.
Angelina moved into the Los Feliz property following her separation from Brad and it became the family’s main Los Angeles home.
The twins reached 18 in July, removing the age-related restriction Angelina had previously cited when discussing her ability to relocate.
A source close to Angelina told TMZ following the sale she has not yet decided where her permanent base will be and plans to travel between her adult children and spend time in Cambodia.
The property sits on more than two acres in the gated Laughlin Park enclave and includes a Beaux Arts-style main residence, a 93 sq m guest house and studio with its own entrance, a 12 metre swimming pool, pool house, fitness studio, tea house and separate garage with a security station.
Its grounds include century-old trees and rolling lawns, with views across the Hollywood Hills towards the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory.
The house was originally designed by architect B. Cooper Corbett in 1913 before Cecil acquired it in 1916.
The filmmaker subsequently expanded the estate by acquiring a neighbouring property once occupied by Charlie Chaplin and connecting the buildings with a glass corridor.
Angelina’s departure comes during another busy period professionally and personally.
Her latest directorial film, Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir is currently in cinemas after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Angelina adapted the drama from Alessandro Baricco’s novel and has recently spoken about the close friendship she developed with Salma while making it.
The pair previously appeared together in Marvel’s Eternals, while Angelina’s best-known screen roles include Lara Croft in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the title character in Disney’s Maleficent, Salt, Wanted, Girl, Interrupted and Mr and Mrs Smith.
She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for Girl, Interrupted and later received a best actress nomination for Changeling.
Angelina has also recently discussed plans to expand Atelier Jolie, the creative collective she established in New York. She has said Brazil could become its first international location, with possible future projects in Vienna and Cambodia.
The sale of her Los Angeles home also comes as her continuing legal dispute with Brad over Château Miraval, the French winery they once owned together, remains active.
Brad’s lawyers have sought additional financial records as part of the long-running litigation over Angelina’s sale of her stake in the estate.
The former couple’s family relationships have also remained in the headlines.
Maddox recently secured court approval to change his surname, removing Pitt from his legal name.
