The RSS mouthpiece, Organiser, has strongly slammed both Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran over their recent release L2 Empuraan. In the latest development, Kerala BJP leader B Gopalakrishnan has accused Prithviraj’s wife, Supriya, of being an ‘Urban Naxal’. On Monday, Gopalakrishnan asked Prithviraj’s mother, Mallika Sukumaran, to control her daughter-in-law’s actions. For the unversed, Gopalakrishnan was offended by Sukumaran’s social media post wherein she claimed her son is being targeted by vested interests. “The BJP in Kerala has only one thing to tell Sukumaran and that’s to rein in her daughter-in-law as she is an Urban Naxal,” Gopalakrishnan had said.
Supriya is a former journalist who had commissioned programmes for the BBC. Years ago, in 2006, both Supriya and Prithviraj Sukumaran had met for the first time. Later, they got married.
Amid the row surrounding L2 Empuraan, superstar Mohanlal had recently apologised and said he “regrets the pain caused” to his fans. The actor confirmed that the movie’s production team had decided to delete some references to the Gujarat riots, which led to a massive uproar. Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, who has directed the movie, had shared Mohanlal’s Facebook post.
“I have learnt that some of the political-social themes that have emerged in the expression of the movie ‘Empuraan’, the second part of the ‘Lucifer’ franchise, have caused a lot of disappointment to many of my lovers. As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my movies harbours hatred towards any political movement, idea or religion,” Mohanlal’s post read.
“Therefore, I and the Empuraan team sincerely regret the mental pain caused to my loved ones, and with the realisation that the responsibility lies with all of us who worked behind the film, we have decided together to compulsorily remove such parts from the movie,” he added.
“I have lived my cinematic life as one of you for the last four decades. Your love and faith are my only strength. I believe Mohanlal is not greater than that,” the actor further mentioned.
Earlier, L2 Empuraan’s producer Gokulam Gopalan had mentioned the production team’s decision to incorporate 17 cuts in the movie and its new version would be release in theatres this week. According to reports, some sequences which depicted violence against women and riots would be removed, the name of the antagonist Baba Bajrangi will also be changed and some dialogues will be muted.
