Amanda Seyfried was in a “dead-end” relationship when she met husband Thomas Sadoski.
“We were both involved with other people,” Seyfried, 40, recalled during the Thursday, December 18, episode of the “Dear Chelsea” podcast. “I just assumed he thought I was a loser because that’s how I viewed myself when it came to men.”
Seyfried was quick to make it clear that she no longer has this mindset.
“I think a part of me had opened at that point because I was so done with feeling like s***,” she said. “I was in a relationship where I was completely just not seen.”
The actress “had the dream” of settling down and having kids, so she “opened” herself up to the possibility of something new.
“I really liked his voice and I liked the fact that he had salt-and-pepper hair,” Seyfried recalled. “He’s a theater guy, so his feet were so solidly on the ground when it came to that kind of work, and I was so scared.”
Seyfried and Sadoski, 49, starred alongside each other in the 2015 Off-Broadway production of The Way We Get By. She noted it was the “first and only” time she did a stage show — but Sadoski helped her along the way.
“I was floating and I felt like he kind of in some way figuratively pulled me down and helped me through and supported me and had this unconditional support of me in that new realm that I was in,” Seyfried continued. “I just felt really safe and seen, and it was a wild new experience that scared me.”
She added, “I think when you’re really scared and you have someone who’s like, ‘Here, take my hand,’ you can’t help but fall in love with something about them — whether they’re a man or a woman — you feel safe. I felt safe with him.”
By January 2016, both Seyfried and Sadoski had ended their previous relationships.
“It was so scary to commit to somebody,” Seyfried admitted, noting that she had been “burned” in her last relationship. However, she joked that she “berated” Sadoski after seeing him “‘like’ another person’s Instagram.”
“I was an a**hole to him, and then we reconnected,” she continued. “He understood that meant I cared about him.”
Us Weekly confirmed in March 2016 that Seyfried and Sadoski were romantically involved. She joked during Thursday’s podcast episode, “Cut to a year later, he held me down and I got pregnant.”
The couple got married in March 2017, welcoming their daughter, Nina, two weeks later. In October 2020, Seyfried and Sadoski announced that they welcomed baby No. 2, a son whose name has not yet been revealed.
The actress recently spoke with Us Weekly exclusively about her struggles balancing work and motherhood.
“Honestly, right now, it’s really hard,” Seyfried said last month. “This is the most I’ve ever worked with two kids, and I’ve never had two movies come out at the same time. And so, I’m a little bit bananas right now.”
Her films The Housemaid and The Testament of Ann Lee both hit theaters this month.
“Oh, my God, they couldn’t be more different,” she told Us of the movies. “I’m very equally proud of both.”
