The GoFundMe page for James Van Der Beek’s family exceeded its goal less than 24 hours after it was created in the wake of the beloved “Dawson Creek” star’s death at 48 on Feb. 11.
The fundraising campaign, which was organized by Van Der Beek’s friends, raised $1.58 million as of Thursday afternoon.
Although the fundraiser’s original goal was $500,000, it was increased to $1.5 million after the GoFundMe page quickly surpassed its initial objective thanks to the help of countless fans and celebrities.
Van Der Beek, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, is survived by his wife of 16 years, Kimberly, and their six children.
The GoFundMe was created to help cover his family’s essential living expenses, pay bills and support his kids’ education – especially as the late actor’s loved ones are “out of funds” and “facing an uncertain future” following his death.
“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care,” the page reads.
“Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,” it added. “Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
