Girls Will Be Girls will start streaming December 18 onwards on Amazon Prime Video. The movie is special, it marks the production debut of Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal and is one of those Indian films this year that have awed audiences the world over with its content. The film, starring Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron, is written and directed by Shuchi Talati and is a coming-of-age drama set in the 90s, on the foothills of the Himalayas. What makes it more special is that it explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationship, a subject not much explored in Indian cinema, along with female sexuality.
Though both Richa and Ali have a commendable body of work as actors, turning into producers with their production house Pushing Buttons wasn’t a cake walk. At the trailer launch of Girls Will Be Girls, Ali recalled the chaos that ensued right at the casting stage, “I was shooting Mirzapur, Richa was shooting Heeramandi and we were also planning and prepping for our wedding. And between all that, between shots, we were looking at auditions and making notes to compare later and find our cast.”
Richa added, “We both are outsiders and we started our career via auditions. So we wanted to go the same way and have auditions for our film to give everyone an equal opportunity.”
Ali also feels that every actor should produce a project at least once, “It humbles you and makes your look at actors from the other side.” Both Richa and Ali, with their insights on handling their cast and crew, business of cinemas and understanding of audience preferences, proved that they are here to make a difference and create independent cinema which has a mass appeal and is entertaining. They understand cinema, the viewers pulse despite the ever changing environment and just like Girls Will Be Girls, want to Push Buttons and make films high on connect and with gravitas.
Girls Will Be Girls streams on Prime Video on December 18. The film will surely take you back in time and provide a solid, feel-good kick of nostalgia.
