Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions and Anonymous Content are planning a documentary project about the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The murder of the insurance company CEO has been dominating the news since Monday, Dec. 4, when Thompson was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan. A multiday manhunt followed for Thompson’s killer, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was arrested on Dec 9 in Pennsylvania and has been charged with murder and is currently fighting extradition to New York City.
When Mangione was arrested, police found a ghost gun, as well as a notebook with detailed plans of the killing, and a handwritten manifesto decrying the health insurance industry. It has been reported that Mangione had undergone surgery on his back.
The killing, which has inspired a mix of public reactions from horror to apathy, has sparked larger conversations about public frustrations with America’s health insurance companies, healthcare costs and general denial of care.
Monday’s announcement laid out what the producers hope to tackle with the documentary: “From the crime’s seemingly meticulous execution to the alleged killer’s manifesto and his Ivy League background to the public’s unapologetic apathy towards the victim, the investigative deep dive will ask how killers are created, what this killing says about our society and the values we place on who lives and who dies.” It is currently unclear who will be directing the project, or if the doc will be told in a feature or episodic format.
The Oscar-winning Gibney recently released The Bibi Files, an inside look into the corruption charges against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He is currently in production on a doc feature inspired by Salman Rushdie’s memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder and an Elon Musk documentary Musk, the latter of which is being produced by Anonymous Content. Anonymous and Jigsaw are also working on a George Orwell documentary Orwell.
